Overcoming Poverty Consciousness
Snug as a bug in a rug, as I lay in crisp white linen, encased with down filled toppers and dooners (duvets), I finally got it! My poverty consciousness melted into the soft bedding and for once the voice in my head had something positive to say.
This time last year I took myself off to a 10 day silent Visspassana retreat in Seattle then I went onto a business bootcamp in Colorado. Seattle saw me sleeping in a sparse hut used for Summer Camp, in the middle of Winter, in a bunk, on a plastic mattress! The loos were up the hill, it rained most of the time and I got three hot showers in 10 days. Colorado saw me sleeping in a five star ponderosa pine cabin right on the edge of a frozen lake - with my own bathroom!
As is often the case when you finally “get” something, the light bulb a-ha moment came out of no where and it was incredibly basic. “I like five star best!”
Plans a Foot to Bust Poverty Consciousness
In the past few weeks Samantha Richardson of Empowering Women has spoken out loud and strong about the poverty consciousness that exists for lightworkers and within the healing and health and wellbeing industries.
Would you like ego with that?
When I was speaking with Sam about her plans to help lightworkers overcome poverty consciousness, I calculated that I have spent over $50,000 getting rid of my mindset around lack, not having enough and not being good enough. I’ve come to believe these negative emotions are all friends who play very well together and it takes a fair degree of effort to break up their little gang because they feast on our ego.
I remember when I was learning Reiki I had a teacher who answered most questions with “oh that’s your ego at work”. I thought ego was “big noting” or “tooting your own horn” but at that time I was quite the opposite of that so I didn’t get it for a long time. Then one day someone gave me this explanation of ego.
You are in ego if you can’t or won’t change.
I’ve spent a massive amount of time and mo.ney de-ego-ing myself via learning.
I’ve read it, workshopped it, seminared it, sweated it, meditated it, ceremonied it and had the best in the business kick my butt with rather large boots. I have travelled thousands of miles, often with very little in my back pocket, trying to understand why I struggled so much with mon.ey, particularly when I attracted it so easily in the corporate world.
Don’t blame it on the boogie, blame it on the solar plexus!
After beating myself up for a long time, and with one courageous step at a time I overcame poverty consciousness by facing and overcoming my FEAR!
What fuels fear? = ego!
What fuels ego? = inability to change!
So to beat fear you have to start doing things differently
I had massive fear around charging appropriately, fear of putting myself out there, fear of being thought “pushy”, fear of everything really. When you have this going on, of course no one wants to work with you because people want to work with solid strong people who have a strong sense of self and a pride in what they do.
If you don’t have the guts to charge what you are worth, people pick up on it and they don’t want to work with you. No clients = no mon.ey!
It’s doubly harder for Lightworkers and Healers
The programming within our cells comes from many lifetimes back. We took vows of poverty, chastity and obedience during deep spiritual ceremonies where our faith and love were celebrated at a very high level. The only way I’ve found to release this is to go back into full ceremony and respect and replace the old vows with more modern vows. We need to change the way we be, think and do at a deep level.
If mo.ney is light, why do lightworkers have so much trouble attracting it?
I saw Dr John DeMartini speak recently and he mentioned that mo.ney was now “light”. Another a-ha moment! Of course it’s light! Most of our mon.ey now travels electronically. It’s rare to have large chunks of physical cash given to you anymore.
So why do lightworkers struggle to attract “light m.oney?” I believe mindset, thoughts and ego are the only things that can stop a lightworker controlling light.
Stands to reason if lightworkers start to really change their mindset around mo-ney and start acting differently - like charging appropriately - they will have more light and abundance on all levels.
You also need to learn how to outsmart fear
Colorado had been a gruelling few days which included having no idea where we were going, not fully aware of what we would need in terms of food and clothing, walking up steep slopes in atrocious weather, waist deep snow, a sweat lodge, a day with a Native American Medicine Man straight after spending 10 days in silence in the rain. I was right outside my comfort zone.
As I sat on the couch on the last day my brain said “why do you keep doing this to yourself?” This day, with my body aching, mind in turmoil and my emotions raw, there was just silence. I had no answer to the question.
Usually that question would have put up a bundle of “not good enough", "everyone else is better than me”, “why would they want to listen to me” fear voice responses.
I knew deep inside myself that I’d cracked it because the fear voice was silenced.
Most people aren’t prepared to go to those extremes to get over themselves. Most won’t even consider taking any actions that differ from their current behaviours and thought patterns.
It is not as simple as just wanting to change; it is also about making the change occur.
The antidote to fear is action
I’ve observed that people who break through have three key learnable attributes:
- Willingness to take a lot of action to understand mo.ney
- Do whatever it takes to face the inner demons
- Keep trusting in self and a higher power
I see a lot of Lightworkers pouring mo.ney into learning more modalities but it’s rare for them to part with their mon.ey to learn business skills. Take a few moments to calculate the ratio between the dollars you have spent learning your modality and the amount you have invested in your business knowledge. I’ll bet if you aren’t getting the results you want, there will be a massive difference between what you have invested in learning about mon.ey and its application.
The amount you get back has a relationship to what you put in or more simply put “you gotta spend mo.ney to make mon.ey”.
The only way to overcome a poverty mentality is to educate it, then take action
There is too much occurring on the planet right now that lightworkers, healers and health and wellbeing practitioners need to be part of. It’s time to gather the troops, stand in your power and be ready to work with as many people as possible.
If you weren’t meant to use your gifts and talents you wouldn’t have been given them.
Poverty consciousness keeps us achieving well below average results for ourselves and our clients
Humans are awesome beings with awesome abilities. We weren’t created to be average. Its time to step up and help as many people as we were meant to help.
Commit today to an attitude of excellence and to do what it takes to fully be of service to others, which means honouring your gifts and talents and charging appropriately, and living an abundant life.
