Why do you need to work with me?If you are like most holistic and wellness practitioners you are brilliant at what you do and you yearn to make a difference in the lives of others. You studied hard and you passed your exams and then it was going to be plain sailing into a natural therapy business of your own. It all sounded so simple back then. So what went wrong? What your training gave you was the skills to be a practitioner but it probably didn't give you the detailed knowledge, skills and confidence to go out and get your own clients and run your own small private practice. It certainly didn't give you the marketing skills you need to survive, let alone achieve the kind of lifestyle and success you dream of. Now you just want to stop struggling and get a steady stream of ideal clients and the type of balanced life you tell your clients they need. That's where I come in I too had the dream but fell flat on my face until I worked out that I needed to combine my holistic skills with my business knowledge. It took me quite some time and thousands of dollars to learn all the things I needed to know. Now I like to share that knowledge. To be successful in business you will probably need to invest close to the same amount to learn what you need to know to have a winning practice as you spent learning your modality. The other thing no one told me was that it takes time, consistent effort and a solid plan to get you where you need to be. Most of all you need a system. That's why I purchased the system that helped me become a successful coach and it's now the system I use to help natural therapists all over the world help more people and achieve the success they deserve and desire. Why Do You Need A Mentor or Coach?A coach or mentor can do many things for you but rather than me waffling on, this article by Roxane Raffin Chan that appeared in the NEWSLETTER OF THE MICHIGAN HOLISTIC NURSES’ ASSOCIATION FEBRUARY 2008 sums it up beautifully. Roxane feels it came out so well because she wrote it from the heart and well we all know that ALWAYS works!
I have only been in business formally for one year and I was surprised to be asked to do a talk on how to start your own healing business. I was still frantically looking around for mentors to help me put together my practice. How could I begin to talk about something I know so little about? Then one day, deep in meditation I found my answer - - just kidding - - it is a no-brainer - - if I put together this talk, I would end up knowing more about how to make my business successful. So, once again, I am grateful for this wonderful organization. Of all the things I have learned, either the hard way from experience or the easy way from listening and reading, the best tip I can give to you is that everyone needs a coach. Personally I have resisted the idea of a business coach for years. This is funny to me, because I have had a spiritual coach, or sponsor, in my life for the last 20 years. This is a person that listens to me and points out to me the inconsistencies of my own words and actions so that I can then adjust myself. I understood that concept when it came to my spiritual life, but I hit a brick wall in finding a business coach. Well, we all know that there are not many of those around. We also know that when someone is successful, they are busy doing what they are successful at, not sitting around waiting to help other people do what they do. Whenever I saw someone promoting himself or herself as a business coach I thought it was lame.
So the most important thing I have learned in putting this talk together is to tell you to go and find a coach. Your friend can be your coach. The MHNA could start a peer group coaching system. You can also get help on-line. What you need is someone who will be interactive with you. You need someone who will listen to what your goals are, what your plan is and what you did today and say, “Well, if your goal is this and your plan is that, then your actions of today do not match”. You need a mirror. That is, after all, how we learn. We learn by feedback. My spiritual program teaches me that I do not have to learn EVERYTHING the hard way – although those lessons do stick with you!!! I can learn from someone else’s example. I can also learn when someone is a mirror for me and allows me to see for myself what is working and what is not working.
